As Fate Would Have It...

It does not bode well for the coming year that it's only the 10th working day of the year and already I'm bored. Maybe because it's a nice sunny day and I'm chafing at the bit to be outdoors instead of being cooped up in my cubicle. Thankfully my cubicle has lots and lots of natural light; I don't think I can deal with being in a cubicle with no view and nothing but the harsh glare of white fluorescent lights the whole day.

Anyhow, recently I've been thinking about predestination. The topic came up during a lunch session with a couple of friends as we were discussing the efficacies of fortune tellers and astronomers. I personally don't believe in any of this but I know people who swear by their various soothsayers and whatnot.

It's uncomfortable for me to accept the notion that our paths are predestined and hence they can be foretold. Because if our paths are predestined, then it takes all the effort out of living. You could just adopt the attitude that what will be will be and not try to change things. Predestination takes responsibility away from our actions. (And I really don't like the idea that we're living in a giant snowglobe for the amusement of some higher being who dictates our every move and occasionally shakes everything upside down just for fun.)

However, I do believe in fate. It sounds contradictory, but maybe it's not. Maybe our lives are like giant probability trees and every step we take moves us further from or closer to various outcomes. At certain signposts some things of great significance happen, which have greater influence on our decisions; maybe that's where fate comes in.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind visiting a fortune teller or an astronomer just to hear what they have to say. Any takers?

And, I learnt a new word today: "gunchang", which apparently translates into "wanker". And I know just who to use it on :D
